Despite a strong wind that threatened to bring our revenues in tents away, we helped the YWCA staff and volunteers set up shoe station, where the male participants may choose women's shoes with the right color, style, and fit for the ride. SJSU athletes firefighters San Jose, police and paramedics, these girls had SVRG walkers help them select the mules, pumps, and stilettos in size. Also equipped event T-shirts, in the case of heels striking not give them as supporting the YWCA.
When it came time to start the hike, we packed our skates and moved to the half point per mile. Our coordinators us YWCA pairs perfectly with our next role: providing water and bandages to the participants. After of all, who knows more about the blisters that Rollergirls? They gave us water to the walkers, some walking and some missteps, and cheered as we passed.
Once people went through our station luggage and followed the high-heeled travelers to California Theater in downtown San Jose, where participants and sponsors were rewarded with prizes for fundraising and refreshments.
Overall it was a great afternoon-a fun and joyful to sensitize the community to some very serious issues. Next year we hope to encourage our own referees to complete male SVRG the first mile in our shoes.

Silicon Valley Roller Girls (SVRG) is an all-female roller flat League classic theme created in 2007 and represents what is known as Silicon Valley, California. SVRG aims to bring an exciting sport to additional communities in Silicon Valley and allows women of all areas of life the opportunity to demonstrate their athleticism, intelligence, individuality, inner beauty and strength by participating in the phenomenon of subculture of roller derby. SVRG is totally skater-owned and managed. Its members represent the Silicon Valley dedicated mothers, professionals and students. SVRG encourages competition between other leagues and strives to represent the Silicon Valley, with sportsmanship and enthusiasm.
About the Author:
We aim to empower our skaters to not only build their skating ability through challenging training and teamwork but also to be involved the operation of the league. We also dedicate ourselves and our efforts to reaching out and bettering the Silicon Valley by participating in community service.
2008 marks SVRG’s first season of bouting against other leagues. This year, in addition to increasing our numbers and creating 2 or 3 distinct teams of our own, we hope to achieve our accreditation from WFTDA, the women’s flat track derby association.
