Whistler has been voted # 1 for 12 consecutive years by U.S. based SKIING Magazine. It also has one of the longest ski resorts in the world (From November to July). Located just two hours north of picturesque Vancouver, this resort is an icon Tourism in Canada with over two million visitors each year.
The complex is within the Coastal Range of British Columbia, with two mountains to enjoy: Whistler and Blackcomb, each with its own unique characteristics. Given the coastal location of the resort, temperatures continue remained moderate throughout the winter season, rarely dropping below -10? in the valley and -15? in the Alps.
Whistler Village is the center of town and has a strong sense of community. A town hall, police station, fire station, medical clinic, museum, library and more than 200 stores and 90 restaurants. There are also plenty of public toilets, telephones and visitor centers.
The town is pedestrian only, so you do not need a car to exploration. A free shuttle bus on hand to help you get around if you feel the need.
The resort also offers a system public transport called Whistler and Valley Express, also known as the wave. The service offers convenient routes throughout the village and its various neighborhoods.
The Whistler's nightlife is excellent with bars, restaurants, clubs and plenty of live music to enjoy. Everyone is sure to find something to fit your needs. The list of places to stay while in Whistler is almost as endless as the snow. Everything from luxury hotels to reasonably priced villas and B & B are available. If you are in the luxury market then you might want to consider The Fairmont Chateau Whistler Four Seasons Resort. There's also a Hilton Resort, the Westin Resort and the two Pan Pacific Resorts on the mountain and village. You will also find luxury condos, houses and cottages available. Of course, if you do not want to spend so much money in a hotel room and then there are many more hotels at reasonable prices. Alternatively, a private villa that once again set out five-star luxury to more modest though no less beautiful than three stars.
If you want to bring your cat or dog with you, Whistler offers some excellent accommodation, pleasant company, and doggie daycare. There are plenty of trails and parks where you can walk your dog, but all dogs must be on a leash in town.
The La winter 2008/09 season will see the opening of the new brand PEAK 2 Peak Gondola. Opening on 12 December 2008, the world record PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola will extend from the top of Whistler Mountain to Blackcomb Mountain peak from a distance of 4.4 kilometers (2.73 miles) in just 11 minutes. The 2 peak PEAK Gondola will be the longest, highest gondola of its kind in the world and provide a breathtaking journey to visitors – winter and summer. The gondola of 52 million U.S. dollars, is easier than ever to enjoy the highest elevation of the terrain, ski services in North America. Each ticket purchased automatically lift access to 2 PEAK Gondola peak, so that everyone can try.
There is much to do in Whistler, such as skiing, heli skiing, snowmobiling, sleigh rides, dog sledding, snowshoeing, ziplining, tours and spas.
Whistler is proud to be an international destination of accessibility to all people, including passengers with disabilities.
There are several transportation options available to get to Whistler. If you are driving to the station, there are designated disabled parking spaces in car parks around Whistler. Public bus service in the community and the local taxi company has designed two options Wheelchair accessible.
Many hotels are accessible by wheelchair and have special facilities. You should ask about all the facilities necessary before booking to make sure you will get the services they require.
Whistler Village is accessible by pedestrian streets, paved access to Valley Road, near transportation, and wheelchair access to the gondola from Whistler Mountain for skiing and sightseeing.
Whistler is considered "largest the gay-friendly mountain resort in North America. "Many hotels are TAG ® approved which means that do not offer policies of discrimination, including sexual orientation and the treatment of heterosexual and domestic partners equally in personnel policies, offering diversity and sensitivity training employees and contract staff to reflect the diversity of the community, including gay and lesbian employees at all levels of employment.
The best time to enjoy Gay Whistler is during the week of WinterPRIDE. This is Canada's largest, gay ski week and next year will take place between February 1 and 8, 2009. This will be the 17th year the event has taken place and gets bigger and better each time.
Mr. Gay World will be crowned during WinterPRIDE. Twenty-four men competing for the title and the winner will work with the international delegation to guide them in a coordinated effort to fight for equality for all human beings, especially the LGBT community.
The Mr. Gay World contest in Whistler will have several challenges that will test the strength of each one of the delegates in the leadership, charisma, intelligence and being a positive role model, and the ambassador and spokesperson for the global cause of equality, respect and understanding.
